Transition House,
Inc.'s Transformation to a Recovery Model
We have finally found a program model that fits our philosophy - the
Recovery Model. The belief is simple - Recovery is possible for persons
who have a mental illness. We have begun to examine our policies and
procedures to ensure that they reflect this belief and empower those in need to
recover from their mental illness.
At the Best Practices conference sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of
Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (DMHSAS), focus was placed on a new
direction for our mental health system. The transformation is moving our
system away from the Medical Model of care to a Recovery Model. With the
Medical Model, emphasis is placed on treating a disease. The Recovery
Model - directed by the person in recovery - focuses on the belief that there is
hope for recovery for persons with mental illness.
The good news - in many ways our agency has been utilizing this model, we
just didn't have a name for it. Over the next several months, our agency
will be examining our policies and procedures and practices to ensure that they
reflect the belief that we have always had - that recovery for persons with a
mental illness is possible. During our transformation, we'll be consulting
with program members and graduates along with staff from Central Oklahoma
Community Mental Health Center, Thunderbird Clubhouse, and Central Office DMHSAS
to ensure that our changes will benefit the people served by our agency.
