Footsteps
Footsteps on a wooden floor,
sounds of terror that are no more.
Fears of a child who had to hide,
pictures of a past that don't subside.
A child violated without a voice,
but now an adult with power and choice.
Tricks of the mind that bring back pain
try to thwart the progress gained.
Phantoms and nightmares which can't control
my life, my heart, my very soul.
A victim of circumstances for years on end
changes her ways, her life to mend.
A victory won by hard work and tears.
A grown-up ready to conquer fears.
